Image by Javier Castillo It was nearly 9 months ago that I said it out loud, though it was much longer that the idea was lingering in the back of my mind. I would cross Patagonia with Darcie my dog and two horses.
It all began with my move to Patagonia two years ago. I had been bouncing between Alaska and the rest of the lower 48 trying to find home. Darcie and I went from living in a van in Colorado to tenting in Portland backyards, and just about everything in-between. 49 states down and we still didn’t have a place that we could comfortably call home.
Patagonia was always in the back of my mind as I had imagined a wild land, open country, a horse culture still very much alive and the gaucho (a group of hard-nosed roamers who’ve found a way to co-exist with a now more “modern” Patagonia while still preserving the old ways of their people).
It was when I first visited two years ago, to the day, that I fell in love with the country and ended up moving permanently just three months thereafter. Upon arriving I was met with Patagonian gaucha legend Carol Jones, who quickly took me under her wing as I was eager to learn all I could from the way of the gaucho.
Image by Erik Ljung Now, after two years of immersing myself in the culture and learning the language and customs of the people, I’m ready to embark on an adventure of a lifetime, travelling 1000 miles trhorugh Patagonia, diving deep into the rich history and culture of the locals while documenting and sharing these undying formalities with you.
My objective for Patagone is to bring to life the beauty and simplicity of slow travel.
During these months leading up to the expedition, I’ll be sharing my blog containing my experiences during the preparation for the trip. This will include flying with your dog to another country, purchasing a horse, choosing the right equipment to take, learning to keep your animals safe in the backcountry, reading maps, and more. My hope is that these experiences will help those of you interested in planning to travel by horse, whether it’s several months or a single day.

¡Lanzamos Patagone!

Fue hace casi 9 meses que lo dije en voz alta, aunque la idea estaba desde hace más tiempo en el fondo de mi mente. Cruzaré la Patagonia con mi perra Darcie y dos caballos. Todo comenzó cuando me mudé a la Patagonia hace dos años. Había estado rebotando entre Alaska y el resto de los 48 estados tratando de encontrar mi hogar. Con Darcie probamos todo, desde vivir en una furgoneta en Colorado hasta acampar en jardines en Portland. Después de todos los viajes, mudanzas, casas y carpas, todavía no encontrábamos un lugar al que podíamos llamar cómodamente hogar. La Patagonia estuvo siempre en mi mente de la manera que uno puede imaginar una tierra salvaje, campo abierto, la cultura del caballo todavía muy viva y el gaucho. Fue cuando por primera vez la visité hace dos años que me enamoré del país y terminé mudándome permanentemente sólo tres meses después. Al llegar conocí a la legendaria gaucha patagónica Carol Jones, quien rápidamente me tomo bajo su ala dadas mis ansias por aprender todo lo posible sobre la cultura gaucha.

Ahora, después de dos años de estar inmersa en la cultura, idioma y costumbres de la gente, estoy lista para embarcarme en una aventura de una vez en la vida, un viaje de 1500 kilómetros a caballo, buceando profundo en la rica historia y cultura de los lugareños, documentando y compartiéndolo con ustedes.
Mi objetivo para Patagone es resucitar la belleza y la simplicidad del viaje lento.
Durante los meses previos a la expedicion, estare compartiendo en mi blog mis vivencias durante la preparacion del viaje, que incluiran volar con tu perro a otro pais, comprar un caballo, elegir el equipo a llevar, aprender a mantener seguros a tus animales en zonas inospitas, leer mapas y demas. Espero que estas experiencias vividas sirvan de ayuda a quienes esten con ganas de planear un viaje a caballo ya sea por un mes o por un dia.
